  2007 Yoga Conference and Show

The Power of Yoga Foundation just wrapped up an exciting weekend at The Yoga Conference and Show 2007, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Toronto, April 27-28 weekend. Director Jackie Jelinek, held three introductory yoga classes, Adapted Yoga for Chair, Special Needs Yoga, and Restorative Special Needs Yoga in the Garden space at the Show. Viniyoga instructor and Power of Yoga member Melissa Campagnolo taught the Restorative class to a number of Power of Yoga students, new and old, who had made the trip out to the Convention Centre for the last day of the Show. All three classes included students young and old interested in learning about yoga as a tool for managing chronic conditions and disabilities. The best part? Seeing familiar faces through the crowd and reconnecting with people who have taught students, and been taught by students, at The Power of Yoga studio. Nothing like yoga to make a friendship, stretch!

The Power of Yoga Foundation has been asked to participate in 2008 Yoga Show and Conference. Details to follow. Until then, stretch you later!

----------
Viniyoga Director, Gary Kraftsow could very well be the gospel of yoga, or at least Viniyoga, or at least yoga therapy. The Power of Yoga was delighted to make Gary's acquaintance at the 2007 Toronto Yoga and Conference Show at one of his classes, Diagnosis and Prescription for Structural Aspects of Yoga Therapy. In his class, Gary explained the musculoskeletal makeup of the body and how yoga helps address the interconnectivity when the intent (physically, the stretch) is localized. The basis of his teaching? That bodies are as individualistic as the person they contain and that yoga should be approached in a similar way: the heart of Viniyoga teaching. To illustrate his point further, Gary gathered the class around four student volunteers to demonstrate specific poses, after their physical profile had been assessed by the student body. One by one, modifications to each students' pose and stature were made in a series of steps in diagnosing the effectiveness in the intent of the posture. In a word, the class was "wowed" by Gary's practical and yet astounding observations made of the four students. The world-class instructor was not only informative but articulate and accessible too. You couldn't help but leave the class, as Viniyoga instructor Melissa Campagnolo knows so well, with the "Gary bug."

There are many way to be a Gary-believer. Check out the Viniyoga website or look into his books and DVDs. Take the plunge (or posture!) to stretch your mind!

  2006 Yoga Show and Conference

The Power of Yoga Foundation presented adaptive yoga on the Yoga Show and Conference main exhibition floor. We enjoyed demonstrating posture adaptations. Our students and volunteers came and practiced with us on stage as Jackie explained how yoga can be adapted for many conditions.
